Another season came to an end last week as Sacred Heart announced their award winners for fall sports teams Wednesday night at the St. Mary's Ukrainian Cultural Centre.

For Chad Holinaty and Trent Senger, principal and vice principal, the process of voting and selecting the best choices for student award winners never gets dull, old or repetitive.

"I could do this every day," insists Senger.

Several teams made some headlines over the past month or two, including soccer provincials on the boys side and the senior football team, which made like the pros one day in early November, hosting a playoff game in the league semi-finals.

Senger began his presentations as head coach by noting that their season officially began on Aug. 16, since that time, they won nine games and only lost twice.

"Different teams step up. It's interesting to see how next yea goes," suggests Holinaty.

Awards were broken down by team for boys and girls volleyball, senior and junior football, boys and girls golf, cross country and boys and girls soccer.

Matt Kustra, Justin Guy Cameron Peepeetch and David Boroto won for junior boys football: MVP offence, MVP defence, Lineman of the year and St. Sebastian awards respectively.

From junior boys volleyball, Jaedon Pellatt was the team MVP, Nicoli Ochitwa won the Most Improved and Justin Poirer won the St. Sebastian award.

The only sport of the night that had only two winners, Jonathan Bell won top male golfer and Brittany Ayers won top female golfer.

In cross country running, Brooke Mentanko was voted MVP, Dakota Mitchell won Most Improved, Emily Kruger won the St. Sebastian award and Rita Fetsch won top rookie.

Fetsch also won offensive MVP for her role on the girls soccer team, followed by Katie Woitas (defensive MVP), Emily Kruger (Most Improved), Kaylee Ford (top rookie) and Brooklynn Lechman (St. Sebastian) award.

In senior girls volleyball, presented by coach Perry Enns, Skylar German, who along with brother Dakota German, were both award recipients in their respective sports of volleyball and football; Skylar was named team MVP of girls volleyball. Other winners on the team were Alex Thompson (Most Improved), Mariel Kotyk (top rookie) and Kelsey Greene (St. Sebastian). From senior boys volleyball, there was one of two ties on the night for an award.

Coach Dean DePape elected two winners for the team's MVP. Tyler Pindus and Mark Kuemper both won. Other awards went to Azrell Johnston as Most Improved, Colin Shewchuk (top rookie) and Anthony Fetsch (St. Sebastian).

In junior girls volleyball, three members won awards. Kristen Jonassen was named MVP, Hanna Hansen (Most Improved) and Allison Kruger (St. Sebastian).

In the other tie for award winners, the coaches of the boys soccer team also voted for two winners for the team's MVP award. Preston Liebrecht and Robert Okeny co-won, while Anthony Fetsch won the St. Sebastian award, Carter Ruff was voted the team's top rookie and Elias Giannoulis was the team's most improved.

For senior football, coach Senger made a point of noting that the results from this season were very high and also set the standards for senior football for the future. It was the first time in memory that the squad advanced to the playoffs and hosted two playoff games. They also played one on the road in between.

Taking home plaques from the memorable season were: Preston Liebrecht (MVP-offence), Nathan Ortynsky (MVP-defence), Ryan Shumay won the St. Sebastian award, Cody Leclerc was named top lineman, Lyndon Shea was top rookie and Dakota German, like his sister earlier in the night, won the team MVP award.
