Over 1,700 driving infractions

RCMP Traffic Services and Saskatchewan RCMP Detachments targeted high-risk drivers on the province's highways over Thanksgiving weekend.

RCMP Traffic Services and Saskatchewan RCMP Detachments targeted high-risk drivers on the province's highways over Thanksgiving weekend.

Operation Impact is a collaborative effort of Canadian police services in order to enforce the laws against high-risk activities of road users.

Operation Impact was originally a one-day campaign aimed at increasing seat belt use across the country. It has evolved to target other high risk activities like impaired driving and intersection safety.

Operation Impact is now a four-day event starting on the Friday of Thanksgiving weekend and ending on the Monday evening.

The four-day enforcement blitz from Oct. 8 - 11 resulted in high numbers of Saskatchewan drivers facing summary offence tickets and Criminal Code Charges. Statistics from the four-day enforcement period resulted in the following:

60 criminal code Impaired Driving charges
38 roadside suspensions
430 summary offence tickets for seatbelt violations
682 citations for aggressive driving
1,712 total infractions identified by RCMP across the province

The sobering numbers indicate that the message of responsible motoring may not be reaching all aspects of the population. RCMP Traffic Services and detachment members will remain vigilant in ensuring they are doing everything they can to promote safety on our provincial roadways for all motorists.
