Police have announced additional charges against Key First Nation Councillor Gerald Michael Papequash in connection to their recent prescription drug trafficking investigation.
On February 3, the 52-year-old was arrested and charged with identity theft, identity fraud, possession of a large quantity of Hydromorphone for the purpose of trafficking, double doctoring (visiting multiple doctors for prescriptions), and breach of undertaking (failure to abide by release conditions).
These charges are in addition to those filed in early January for trafficking in a controlled substance and possession of property obtained by crime.
The councillor serves in the Key First Nation north of Kamsack alongside his 58-year-old brother, Chief Clarence Papequash, who is also facing trafficking charges.
Gerald Papequash and a number of other individuals charged in the investigation had their first scheduled court appearance in Yorkton on Monday. Clarence Papequash and eight others are scheduled to appear in court in Kamsack on February 16.
The latest charges were the result of an investigation between the Yorkton District General Investigation Section, Kamsack RCMP, and Tisdale RCMP. Police say their work is ongoing.
