Making changes for housing development

Yorkton Council began the process of necessary amendments to its Municipal Development Plan and Zoning Bylaw to accommodate a proposed residential development on a portion of the former C.J. Houston School property.

Yorkton Council began the process of necessary amendments to its Municipal Development Plan and Zoning Bylaw to accommodate a proposed residential development on a portion of the former C.J. Houston School property.

Gord Shaw, with the City's Planning & Engineering Department explained the City will be transferring a portion of the east half of the property to a developer who is proposing to build senior housing units beginning early in 2011.

The development proposal consists of 12 single-floor dwelling units within one building.

The amendment to the Municipal Development Plan ensures that the Zoning Bylaw can act as the implementation instrument in a coordinated manner to ensure compliance to the statutory plan.

The property is currently zoned as Institutional District (IN) under the Zoning Bylaw. In order to accommodate the proposed development outlined in an earlier report, the zoning must be amended to Medium Density Residential District (R-3).

Both amendments were given unanimous first reading support at the regular meeting of Council Monday. Both will have to be given second and third readings at a future meeting.
