Major Ron Haskell, the Deputy Commanding Officer of the 64th Field Battery in Yorkton made a presentation to the City of Yorkton at the regular meeting of Yorkton Council Monday.
Haskell recently returned from a tour of duty with the Canadian Armed Forces in Afghanistan, where he said several members of the Battery have served.
Haskell told Council before he left for Afghanistan he "asked for a City of Yorkton flag" to take with him. His idea was to gather local members serving in the country for a picture with the flag.
"The photograph I'm presenting to you tonight almost didn't happen," he said, noting the soldiers were stationed at different locations.
However, he was eventually able to fly into a forward Base Wilson location via Chinook helicopter to meet with two other soldiers; Bombardiers Austin Horvisko and John Bencharski, from the local Battery for a photograph with the flag in front of a M777 Howitzer.
In addition to the photograph, Haskell also presented the flag to the city, "signed by each member in the photograph."
Haskell said the presentation to the City was important because there is "a very, very strong association with 64 Battery." He added many Battery members are from Yorkton and area.
As a Commander, Haskell said he is "very, very proud of the work that they've done.
"I'm proud of them and the City of Yorkton can be proud of them too."
