École St. Michael's School in Yorkton is celebrating la Semaine d'Éducation Française- French Education Week from February 7 to 10.
During this week, the French Immersion program at École St. Michael's School tries to promote not only the French language but also the French culture in a variety of activities. This year, the school has decided to concentrate on French music.
A French Acapella group from Montreal started out the activities by playing a lively concert for the Immersion students. In the classrooms, the students will have an opportunity to learn about a French singer/songwriter or a French Band.
They will listen to the music in class and study the language within the song. This helps to encourage the French culture in a primarily English speaking society. There will also be a French book fair at the school during this week to purchase new French books.
The goal of French Immersion is to provide French instruction in a setting where children are surrounded by the language all day. Graduates of the French Immersion program are considered functionally bilingual which means they are able to communicate in their second language while maintaining the same fluency as their peers in their first language.
Here's some of what the students of École St. Michael's School think about learning a second language.
I like French because the teachers are good. You get to learn another language. It's fun.

I decide to take French because when my mom was little she took French. She grew up in a small French town.. Everyone there speaks French. French is a lot better than I thought. The first day of French school I was nervous. I didn't really know what to do. My first words in French were colors like rose, bleu, peche and jaune. I like taking French. Its fun!
