The flood is certainly the event people will remember from this year especially for those who have had to live with the damage the heavy rains of July 1.
The storm caused severe damage in Yorkton to homes and businesses in our area.
Nationally this event may no longer be in the news, but for those of us who live here the clean-up and repairs are still very much in progress.
As for Parkland Mall it could have been worse, but certainly the Centre did not go unscathed.
"Close to 1/3 of the mall had extensive water damage" explained Property Manager Richard Okrainec. "Water was bubbling through the floor in the former Bay and coming down the corridor. In Sobeys it came through the rooftop units, Shoppers Drug Mart was affected as were many other locations. It was a disaster."
"If it wasn't for the hard work of the mall staff and tenants I can't imagine how bad it could have been, especially trying to find help on Canada Day and not 小蓝视频 able to get around the City. The final tab still isn't in and repairs are still 小蓝视频 completed but certainly it will top $250,000 collectively."
Other than that it's been a normal year not, suggested Okrainec. Several new Tenants have made an appearance at the Parkland Mall as a result of the flood as many businesses in the city were forced to relocate because of their own extensive damage. The Salvation Army and The Red Cross made their headquarters at the mall for their disaster relief providing supplies and food to those most affected. The Canadian Cancer Society has been on site for almost 4-months and the Regional Library will be around for much longer than that.
"We may be owned by a Corporate Company, but I managed to convince them to allow these businesses to relocate while they tried to re-build. We are all citizens here and tried to help out the best that we could. I know those who had to relocate here certainly appreciated it."
As we all slowly get our lives back the Mall continues to forge ahead. Earlier in 2010 Parkland Mall saw the expansion of both Mano's Restaurant and Sherring Optical which included complete renovations.
"If you haven't been to either of these local businesses your really should make an effort to have a look," says Okrainec. "These places were done 1st class and both owners should be very proud of what they have accomplished." Ardene's also completed a major expansion and their new look is a great addition to the Centre.
The fall will also see the relocation and expansion of Tan Jay, which will include the Alia Brand, as well as the expansion of The Source by Circuit City. These projects will be completed in and around October/November.
"We also hope to have an announcement very shortly on the remaining space which was occupied by The Bay. The new Tenant, if all goes according to plan, will occupy roughly 25,000 square feet sometime in the new year."
Next up promotion wise is Christmas, which will quickly be upon everyone. The Parkland Mall will again participate in a Food Drive with The Soup Haven during this time as well as provide Santa and photos for families and children.
The Parkland Mall has a terrific mix of both National and Local Tenants who provide a bit of something for everyone. It's anchored by Zellers, Sobeys and Shoppers Drug Mart, a Food Court and many choices in between.
Preparations are also underway for the Fall of 2011 as Parkland Mall will celebrate its 35th year in the City of Yorkton.
