A small fire at Dr. Brass Elementary caused an evacuation of the school on Thursday morning.
A kitchen fire set off the building's smoke alarm at around 11 a.m. Dec. 2, prompting staff to evacuate students to the school's designated safe area at Holy Trinity Church two blocks away.
The fire was suppressed by the building's sprinkler system by the time firefighters arrived, said Deputy Chief Trevor Morrissey.
"We checked for extension and put out any small extension pieces in the ceiling and in the wall, and shut the sprinkler system down to limit water damage."
Fire Protective Services turned the building back over to school staff by noon.
Dr. Brass was closed for the remainder of Thursday and Friday while the site was cleaned up and emergency systems were brought back online.
Classes had already resumed at the school by Monday morning.
Deputy Chief Morrissey praised the staff and students for their quick and orderly evacuation of the building.
"It went very smoothly. The school acted exactly how they were supposed to."
