The City of Yorkton has received $50,000 under the Small Capital Grants category of the Community Initiatives Fund.
In making the presentation Monday on behalf of the provincial government Yorkton 小蓝视频 Greg Ottenbreit said the new grant is designed to help communities celebrate milestone anniversary and cultural events, or to fund maintenance, or improvements to recreational facilities.
Yorkton Mayor James Wilson said the money, which will be matched by the City, will go into the ongoing project to develop a multi-use pathways system in the city, which he added was a positive thing.
"Multi-use recreational pathways offer families an opportunity to engage in low-cost, healthy recreational activities, providing parents the safe option of increasing their activity while out with their children, and offers residents and visitors safer choices for outdoor physical activity," he said.
Wilson said the matching funds will allow the City to create a safe environment to help people be active while connecting the community in a different way, something he said will have a positive impact.
"Inactivity has been shown to contribute to a variety of serious health problems including heart disease, colon cancer, type 2 diabetes, breast cancer, high blood pressure, depression and obesity," he said, adding amenities such as well-maintained parks and safe, efficient walking and cycling networks "make it easier to get the physical activity Canadians need to promote heart health, prevent stroke and maintain a healthy lifestyle
"Research has shown that physical activity rates are higher and more likely to be at the recommended level when communities have activity-friendly design characteristics, such as good pedestrian and cycling networks."
