Changes have been made to The Electrical Licensing Exemption Regulations which will allow employers to hire additional employees to meet the needs of the labour market.
The amended regulation effectively changes the required ratio of journeypersons to apprentices in the electrical trade to be one journeyperson to two apprentices (1:2).
"The need for skilled tradespersons in Saskatchewan continues to grow," Advanced Education, Employment and Immigration Minister Rob Norris said. "This change will enable more people to register as apprentices, receive skills training and contribute to our growing economy."
In the past, the ratios in most trades had been one apprentice to one journeyperson. Many other designated trades in Saskatchewan already have a similar ratio.
"This change reflects our governments commitment to ensuring skilled, trained tradespeople," Corrections, Public Safety and Policing Minister D.F. (Yogi) Huyghebaert said. "We are pleased to be able to help move the economy forward by providing for future skilled tradespeople."
The Saskatchewan Apprenticeship and Trade Certification Commission expects that apprentice numbers will grow over time as a result of this change. The Commission's mandate is to provide training for apprentices as they continue to ensure that apprentices receive training opportunities.
