Yorkton Council unanimously voted to proclaim September as Big Brothers Big Sisters Month in the City.The month is already recognized nationally.
"Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada commit to Canada's young people that we will be leaders in providing them with the highest quality, volunteer based mentoring programs," outlined a letter from Big Brothers Big Sisters of Yorkton and District circulated at Council Monday.
The Yorkton organization "is a community supported, volunteer based organization committed to the healthy development of children in need and their families through the provision of quality one-to-one mentoring relationships and other related programs serving children from Yorkton, Melville, Churchbridge, Esterhazy and Langenburg.
"Presently we serve over 250 children annually through various mentoring programs."
When asked, local organization Executive Director Irma Van De Bon, said there 30 big brother and big sister matches locally, with 36 children on a waiting list. Last year there were 120 youth in the mentor program.
Activities to mark the month include a flag raising Sept. 8 at City Hall, a recruitment drive giving out hamburgers and hotdogs Wednesday, Sept. 15 at Cornerstone Credit Union sponsored by SaskEnergy.
In Esterhazy, Sept. 30 Bigway Foods will be hosting a barbecue with proceeds going to support Esterhazy Mentoring Programs.
