Swan River golfer tops Golden Duck competition at Madge Lake

A total of 96 men played singles match play and 32 women played two-person scramble match play during the Golden Duck golf championship held at the Madge Lake Golf Resort.

MAGDE LAKE — Derek Chez of Swan River, Man., was named men’s champion of the Golden Duck golf championship held at the Madge Lake Golf Resort Aug. 19 to 21, while the women’s championship team was the mother-and-daughter duo of Trudi and Mackenzie Binkley of Madge Lake.

“We did manage to put on smaller versions of the Golden Duck through the COVID-19 restrictions, but nothing of this size for some time,” said Darren Driscoll, owner of the resort.

“It was awesome. We had people on a waiting list,” said Sally Driscoll. “And the weather was perfect.”

Neil Hudye of the Kamsack area got his first hole-in-one on the Par 3 sixth hole on Friday, winning himself a prize of $5,000, Darren said.

A total of 96 men played singles match play and 32 women played two-person scramble match play, he said. Fifty-four of the competitors played in a “horse race” on Friday night, in which there are two-person teams with only one club, so alternates shoot.

Thirty players had a shot at a $50,000 shootout on Saturday night on the 18th hole, he said. Women shot from 150 yards and men, from 165 yards. Les Schmidt of Madge Lake came within inches of the cup, but the ball just ran by the hole.

The Iron Grill from Kamsack catered a tremendous roast beef meal for the tournament banquet on Saturday, Darren said. Molson provided the beer on Friday night.

“Tons of local businesses sponsored holes and prizes and we had a number of volunteer members who helped make the tournament a huge success,” he said. “Our staff inside and outside on the maintenance crew were amazing all weekend and the 90 or so out-of-towners were left with a great impression.”
