KAMSACK — The River Valley Archery Club held its annual summer outdoor 3-D shoot July 23 and 24 at the Pretty View school site north of Veregin.
“This is the fourth year that we’ve had the summer shoot at Pretty View,” said Scott Green, club president. “It was a fun shoot, but we’re planning to get more serious in the future, working towards eventually holding a provincial shoot that will attract competitors from across the province.
“We will be able to do that once we have enough volunteers from the surrounding communities,” he said. “In turn, this will bring business to the community, especially for the hotels and motels.”
Held from about 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on both days, the event attracted 30 players on Saturday, and nearly the same number on Sunday, Green said.
The event included pancakes-and-sausages breakfast, and then hamburgers, hot dogs and smokies were available later in the day, he said. Anna Cymbalisty and Caitlin Lucash worked at the grill both days.
“We had 40 targets set out on two 20-target courses and 11 of the targets were sponsored,” he said. Participants were of both sexes and ranged in age from about six years to 60-some years.
“Archery is a great sport for all ages.”
Medals were awarded archers who competed on both days.
Clinton Leis won gold in the Senior Known 50 male category, while Devan Petruk won silver, and Lonny Gray, bronze.
Andrea Wiens won gold in the Senior Known 50 female category, while Ricky O’Soup won gold in the Peewee Compound male category, and Robin Squirra, gold in the Traditional female category.
Francois Squirra won gold in the Senior Traditional male, while Cornelia Squirra won gold in the Senior Traditional female category, and Petra Squirra, silver.
Justin Hladun won gold in the Senior Hunter male category, and Aliyah Cymbalisty, gold in the Cub Compound female category.
In the Pre-Cub Compound male category, Dominick O’Soup won gold; Dameon Lillebo, silver, and Lance Lucash, bronze.
During the event Mary Perepelkin helped reveal a new, large elk target that was purchased in memory of her son Darren, a club supporter who died two years ago, Green explained.
Green said that an open house and sign-up event is planned in the future to be held at the Veregin rink which the club occupies and a regular club sign-up will be held in October.
“We also conduct two indoor 3-D shoots during the winter in the Veregin rink,” he said.
