KAMSACK — The Kamsack Spartans wrapped up their regular season in the SHSAA 6-Man 2A Football Conference 3, finishing in a tie for first place with the Wynyard Bears. Both teams concluded the regular season with a 4-1 record, and it was a season marked by several noteworthy matchups.
On Sept. 15, the Spartans faced Lanigan in a hard-fought battle. The Spartans emerged victorious with a close 35-34 win, thanks to the inspired play of Levi Earhart on offence and Justice Blackwood on defence. Declan Kosolkowski, a two-way star, was named the player of the game.
The following week, on Sept. 20, the Spartans travelled to Wynyard to take on the Bears. Despite a valiant effort, the Spartans faced difficulties in the Bear's den, falling 58-21 after losing the ball on the 1-yard line just before halftime.
The Spartans continued their season on Sept. 29 when they hosted Ituna. Despite the Warriors' energetic performance, the Spartans, with a potent running attack led by Levi Earhart and a well-rounded passing game involving four different receivers, managed to secure a 61-48 victory, showcasing their senior-laden lineup.
Kamsack returned to their home turf on Oct. 6 for a crucial game against Lanigan, with playoff implications on the line. The Spartans delivered a stellar defensive performance, recording over ten sacks and shutting out the Lazer offence in the second half. This formidable display culminated in a 41-22 victory for Kamsack, with Ty Thomas making a notable return, contributing five sacks along with key receptions from Earhart and Justice Waugh, including a long 50-plus yard score to close out the first half.
In their final regular-season game on Oct. 13, the Spartans hosted Wynyard at Sparty Park. The home team demonstrated a balanced offensive strategy, combining a ground game with thunder and lightning to wear down the Bear's defense before launching successful passes to Bobby Taylor, Thomas, and Waugh. The Spartans secured a 50-35 victory to conclude the regular season on a high note.
Making their first playoff appearance since the program's reboot in 2022, the Spartans now prepare for a first-round provincial clash against the Conference 1 champions, Clavet. The highly anticipated matchup is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 27, with a 7 p.m. kickoff under the lights in Clavet. Football fans are encouraged to make the trip to witness the exciting playoff action.
