Kamsack Public Library hosts grand re-opening

鈥淭he closing of the Crowstand Center and the impact of COVID-19 were very difficult for us.鈥

KAMSACK — Community members, local officials, and sponsors gathered on Oct. 17 to celebrate the ongoing efforts to support the Kamsack Library. During the event, heartfelt thanks were extended to the sponsors, donors, and volunteers who have played a key role in keeping the library alive despite the challenges with Covid and the Crowstand Centre closing.

Betty Dix, Chair of the Kamsack Library Board, began the event by acknowledging the special guests in attendance, including Mayor Nancy Brunt, Town Admin Barry Hvidston, and representatives from local businesses such as Painted Hand Casino. Dix also expressed gratitude to sponsors like the RM of Cote and the Kamsack Book Club, highlighting their significant contributions.

“The closing of the Crowstand Center and the impact of COVID-19 were very difficult for us,” Dix said. “But thanks to your grants and donations, we’ve been able to upgrade the library’s security system, refurbish Indigenous children's materials, and add new resources like laptops and furniture.”

The library has also been able to generate funds through community events like hot dog sales and raffles. A handmade quilt, donated by the Quilt Club, will soon be raffled off with tickets available at $10 for three, with the draw set for the Christmas in November event coming up.

Mayor Nancy Brunt spoke about the struggles the library faced following the closure of its previous home in the lower level of the Crowstand building, which was significantly larger than the current temporary space.

“This is not a permanent location for the library,” Brunt said, emphasizing the town's commitment to finding a more suitable space. “The library is a vital asset, not just for the town but for the surrounding areas as well. We’re still searching for a permanent home where we can house a larger collection and archives.”

“We’ve pulled it together,” Dix concluded. “The support from all the groups and individuals involved has been overwhelming.”

As the event wrapped up, attendees were invited to enjoy coffee, juice, and cookies, while celebrating the library’s progress and looking forward to its future.
