Beechy Sandcastles Closed to Public in 2019

Landowners cite risks with increased visitation

One of the Lake Diefenbaker region鈥檚 most popular tourist spots will not be open to the public this year.

The sandcastles located near the village of Beechy, which have drawn sightseers, landscape photographers, hikers, and canoers enjoying the lake, will be closed off to the public this coming tourism season.聽 The closure also includes the connecting Sunken Hill.

Both the sandcastles and Sunken Hill are located on private land, with the landowners generously allowing visitors to access the area in order to view the natural formations that have grabbed attention for many years.

Tourism Saskatchewan announced the closure last week on behalf of the landowners, citing the challenges that come with 鈥渋ncreasing visitation and associated risks.鈥

The closure of the sandcastles has started a conversation on social media about the need to respect land, particularly any land that private owners have allowed the public to access, and the harsh lesson that can be learned when a few proverbial 鈥榖ad apples鈥 perhaps break the rules and ruin an experience for everyone else.
