There was something for everyone at Canora Ag Days

Competition was tight in the chuckwagon and chariot races, as well as the gymkhana events.

CANORA — Canora Ag Days was held over the Aug. 26-27 weekend, hosted by the Canora Ag Society with plenty of excitement on both days. Carmen Wolkowski, Ag Society president, reported that, “attendance was strong again this year and everyone in the community seems to be happy that we have the show again after a few years of not having it.”

Wolkowski said one of the highlights of the weekend was the “spectacular show put on by the Truco Trick Riders from 小蓝视频east Saskatchewan who are only 14 and 16 years old.”

Another new event at Ag Days was the Barnyard Olympics for youngsters.

“Barnyard Olympics consisted of jumping over bales, flipping tires, gunny sack race, egg spoon race, and the milking pail (similar to milking a cow).

“A lot of laughs were had at the beer gardens Saturday night where we had the first time ever Husband Calling Contest and Yodeling Contest,” said Wolkowski.

The stick horse races have been held during the chuckwagon races ever since Ag Days started in Canora. “Stick horse races have been a highlight at our halftime show every year since then,” said Wolkowski. “The little ones love to go on the big track where they get to have some fun going around the barrel and get a bag full of treats.”

Enthusiast crowds cheered on the riders and the racers. Before the start of chuckwagon races on Aug. 26, Bryce Young, race announcer, prayed the Wagon Driver’s Prayer.  “Heavenly Father, we pause, mindful of the many blessings You have bestowed upon us. We ask that You be with us at these races, and we pray that You will guide us on the race track of life.

“We don’t ask for special favours, or to draw the rail every time, nor do we ask for all daylight runs or to never tip a barrel. Help us Lord to live our lives in such a manner that when we make that last, inevitable ride to the country where the grass grows lush, green and neck yoke high, and the water runs cool, clear and deep, that You, as our last judge, will tell us that our entry fees are paid. Amen.”

All racing and riding events took place over both days.

In the chuckwagon races, the overall winner was Casey Peterson. Colin Kilborn finished second and Kelvin Hawreluik came in third. Rounding out the top five were Jeff Fyfe in fourth and Curtis Longman fifth.

The best dressed chuckwagon award went to Bert Buhler.

In the chariots, Twyla Salmond finished on top, with the Casey Peterson B outfit in second. Brandee Braaten placed third, Casey Peterson’s A wagon was fourth, and Curtis Longman came in fifth.

The award for the best dressed chariot went to Tanner Hawreluik.
