There are numerous talented students in Canora and Invermay in the areas of art and writing. Many of those students were involved in a very successful poster and literacy contest held by the Canora Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion during the fall of 2021.
The Branch would like to extend “a huge thank you to the schools that participated and made the event a success,” said Lori Dennis, Canora Legion representative. “It was wonderful to see the talent and imagination of the students and it was difficult to pick the winners!”
Large photo sessions were not possible due to social distancing protocols but photos of two winners from Canora Junior Elementary School (CJES) were obtained. The contest winners from CJES, Canora Composite School (CCS), and Invermay School are listed for the following categories.
In the primary category, Juan Miguel Lucas of Invermay won first place. Layla Keyowski and Aries Bryant of CJES placed second and third respectively.
The top three finishers in the junior poster contest were all from CCS. Klowie Holmgren finished first, Kruze Oswald placed second and Tobbi Effa was third.
Bennet Carlson of Invermay earned first place in the junior black and white poster contest. Cassidy Wolkowski and Madison Dutchak, both CCS students, finished second and third respectively.
Invermay students excelled in the junior poem contest, capturing the top three spots. Jasmin Kowalyshyn won first place, Michael Mesias was second and Hanna Enge placed third.
In the intermediate colour poster competition, Cielo Marasigan of Invermay was the winner. Luca Propp of CCS took second place, and Preston Graham of Invermay finished third.
Madeline Glass of Invermay captured first place in the intermediate poem contest. Clovie Cabrageal, also of Invermay, finished second, and Silver Nordin of CCS achieved third place.
The top three placings in the senior poem contest went to Invermay students. Rachel Enge was the winner, Christine Cabrageal finished second, and Emily Koturbash placed third.
The primary portion of the competition includes kindergarten through Grade 3 students, and junior involves grades 4 to 6. Grades 7 to 9 students participate at the intermediate level, and the senior competition involves high school students in grades 10 to 12.
