In order to be prepared in case of a fire, students and staff gathered at the muster point outside Canora Composite School during the fire drill supervised by the Canora Fire Department on Oct. 14. A fire drill was also held at Canora Junior Elementary School.

CANORA - Students and staff at Canora Composite School and Canora Junior Elementary School had quite an unexpected interruption to their regular schedules on Oct. 14 when the Canora Fire Department rolled in for a surprise fire drill at each school.

Even though they arrived at each school unannounced, Captain Mike Doogan said they made sure to check with the principal or an administrator first, just to make sure there wasn't a test going on or any other important event. After receiving approval, they pulled the fire alarm.

Doogan said "Both schools did awesome, the best I've ever seen in about 10 years of doing this," as they exited the school safely and quickly.

The Fire Department's theme for this year is "Fire won't wait, plan your escape."

Doogan said it's important for schools to have a plan, take it seriously, and for students and staff to know the quickest and safest way out of the school, and gather at the school's muster (meeting) point.
