CANORA 鈥 A former mayor and councillor is throwing in her name for one of the six spots on Canora Council in the upcoming civic elections.
鈥淚 tried to retire from public service but it鈥檚 a part of who I am,鈥 said Gina Rakochy.
Rakochy was on council for more than 15 years and served as mayor for four, while raising her family alongside her late husband Tom. She said she grew up in Canora, raised her family here and is loving her retired life here.
鈥淏eing an advocate and member of council and a community volunteer were some of the best years of my life,鈥 Rakochy said. 鈥淚 firmly believe that you can always make improvements, but you need to put in the work to make a difference.鈥
Rakochy has served on numerous community boards over the past 35 years. She was the chair of the Local School Board, president of Canora School of Dance, president of Canora Speed Swimming Club, president of the Nursery school, Canora Tourism Committee, Canora Leisure Services Board, Health Foundation fundraisers, Canora and District Fire Board, Assiniboine River Archery Club, and Royal Canadian Legion. In her retirement, she is on the new rink project planning committee, Canora Tourism Fundraising Committee and a Canora Senior Cobras volunteer.
鈥淎s you can see I am dedicated to making a difference in our town for the better,鈥 she said. 鈥淭alk is cheap 鈥 you got to put in the work in which I proudly have.鈥
The candidate said that from her experience in municipal government and 29-year career as the Risk and Compliance Officer for the Crossroads Credit Union, she understands the many facets, procedures and protocols of municipal government.
鈥淚 will not make people promises I can鈥檛 keep and tell people what they want to hear 鈥 as a representative of general government you can not do that; but you can strive to make a difference and put in the work, which I have,鈥 Rakochy said. 鈥淚 am not afraid to make difficult decisions and love to work with all ages to achieve a better goal, which is always community first.鈥
Rakochy encouraged residents to call her at 306-563-7647 if they wanted to share their concerns and desires for our community, as well as had any questions about her intention to run for council.
鈥淚 am looking forward to hearing from the residents of Canora and working to find resolutions, solutions and always working forward.鈥
The next civic election will be on Wednesday, Nov. 13.
