CANORA - Anyone who follows senior baseball and/or senior hockey in Canora is probably quite familiar with Kody Rock. Rock is also a graduate of Canora Composite School, but this year he is back in the role of newcomer.
Rock is taking over as CCS vice-principal from Derek Serdachny, who is the new principal after the retirement of Kim Eiteneier.
Rock spent most of his formative years in Canora, after moving here from Saskatoon with his family when he was in Grade 3.
“Growing up, I was interested in anything relating to sports; baseball, hockey, basketball, football, golf, and so on,” he said. “I went to Mayville State University (North Dakota) for physical education and science, and earned a bachelor of education. I played baseball on a scholarship for four years.”
After his university career, Rock signed a professional baseball contract and played professionally for two seasons. He said that experience turned out to be quite helpful for his teaching career.
“I learned a lot about leadership, discipline, and how to build positive relationships quickly as there were many trainers, coaches, etc. along with different players who were moved in and out very quickly.”
Before returning to CCS, Rock taught in Kamsack for three years, and served as vice-principal last year. His previous teaching experience included a year in Preeceville, a year in Sturgis, and a year as a substitute.
In addition to his vice-principal responsibilities, Rock will be teaching middle/high school math and science.
“I enjoy the relationships that can be built with the kids and having the opportunity to make a positive impact on others' lives.
“My goal for my students is to give them as positive of a learning experience as I can. I want all students to have great opportunities to learn, and be successful in my classes.”
Rock continues to live in Canora and pursue his interest in sports in his spare time.
“I play baseball for the Supers, hockey for the Cobras, and I love to golf.”
