Excitement building for opening of new season at Canora Civic Centre

After a lost season due to the pandemic, the Canora Civic Centre has a full slate of activities planned for the new season.

After an abbreviated season in 2020/21 due to pandemic restrictions, the Canora Civic Centre opened for the 2021/22 season on October 25 with a full slate of activities planned, according to Aaron Herriges, director of leisure services.

The Canora Skating Club is scheduled to hit the ice on Wednesdays. Approximately a dozen skaters have registered so far, and more are welcome. Those interested in joining, or looking for more information, are encouraged to contact Heather Chabun, president, at 306-571-9773.

Canora Minor Hockey is gearing up for the coming season with teams in the age categories of: U7, U11, U13 and U15 (split with Preeceville). The Prairie Ice U15 girls team is starting its second season, based out of Canora. The roster includes five players from Canora, as well as players from: Kamsack, Cote First Nation, Preeceville, Pelly, Buchanan, Foam Lake, Theodore and Yorkton.

The Canora Cobras Senior Hockey Club is back for a new season. Since Hudson Bay has dropped out of the league, a revised schedule has been released for the 2021/22 season. The Cobras open with a home gave versus Ituna on Friday, November 12, followed by a road trip to Theodore for a game on November 13. The Cobras have four more games scheduled before Christmas, including three home contests on: November 27 versus Whitewood, December 10 versus Ituna, and December 18 versus Theodore. Canora comes out of the Christmas break with a road game in Ituna on January 7. The regular season ends with a home game against Rocanville on January 29.

Canora Flames Rec Hockey will be operating differently this year. Pickup games will be organized within the community every Friday night, instead of travelling to other communities. Any players, who are interested in joining the online sign-up list, can contact Colin Kitchen. A cost recovery scheme will be put into place to cover the ice fees.

The Yorkton A’s Rec hockey team plays at the Canora Civic Centre on Thursday nights at 8:45 p.m.

Everyone is reminded that live updated schedules are located on Canora.com

Pandemic Guidelines at the rink are as follows:

•           As per Public Health Order, anyone entering the Canora Civic Centre will be required to wear a mask. Bandanas or gaiters are not appropriate face coverings and will not be permitted. It is recommended to use a non-medical mask which covers the mouth and nose. The material can be cloth or other material.

•           Exempt from the masking order will be indoor youth athletics for those under the age of 18 years while they are actively engaged in athletic activity.

•           Masking in venues hosting youth athletics will remain required for general entry and exit into the facility, for athletes and spectators.

•           We would like to see participants arriving on time but not early and leaving as soon as possible after their scheduled event or practice.

•           For more information in regards to minor hockey specific guidelines, visit hockeysask.ca

•           We would like to remind everyone that we encourage the frequent use of hand sanitizer stations that are located around the rink, but most importantly, if you are not feeling well, please do not come the rink.
