First cross-country meet brings encouraging results for CCS

A number of local runners finish in the top 10 in their age groups at the Cherrydale meet.

CANORA- The 2022 cross-country season is underway.
The Canora Composite School cross-country team had a successful trip to the Cherrydale Cross-Country meet held east of Yorkton on Sept. 15, achieving numerous top-10 finishes, according to coaches Thomas Lowes and Leona Kitchen. 
"We always like starting the season with a race at the Cherrydale golf course," reported the coaches. "It is such a great course, and spectators have a great view from the top of the hill as the runners are completing their course. Our number of runners are down this year, but we are confident the ones who are sticking with it will see great results!"  
In the U11 boys race, which covered two kilometres, Karter Shukin placed fourth out of 108 runners. Other CCS entries in the race were: Aidyn Tratch, 14th; Yuri Olynyk, 29th; Raphael Rollin, 35th; Izaiah Crowe, 55th, and Camery Burym, who finished 64th.
In U11 girls, also a two-kilometre race. Angel Sliva finished second out of 75 runners, with Courlyn Heshka close behind in third, while Tarryn Tratch came in 33rd.
The U12 boys race covered three kilometres. In a field of 33 runners, Kasen Heshka placed fifth. Zarin Godhe was 29th and Reid Kitchen came in 31st.
In the U12 girls three-kilometre race, Madison Dutchak finished ninth out of 28 runners. Claire Ruf placed 15th, followed by Tessa Prychak in 24th.
In the U13 boy three-kilometre race, Jackson Palagian achieved 10th place in a field of 20 runners.
In the U14 boys three-kilometre race, Kayden Harder was sixth and Josh Prychak finished 12th out of 15 runners.
There were three entries in the U14 girls three-kilometre race, and Merrick Derkatch placed second.
The U15 boys race also covered three kilometres. Out of 10 runners, Ty Lemaigre came in fifth, Andrew Sliva was right behind in sixth, and Henry Craig placed ninth.
There were six athletes entered in the Over 16 boys group. Hunter Lamb was the winner, while Porter Wolkowski placed third and Jack Craig finished fifth.
The CCS cross-country team is scheduled to compete in Saltcoats on Sept. 29. Distrcts will follow, with the date and location to be announced.
