CANORA - The Canora EuroTrip Club gathered on Feb. 7 for the second last meeting before the group’s trip to Europe.
The meeting involved discussion about what to pack and what to wear. Travellers were told to bring plug-in adapters for their phones as the plug-in ports are different in Europe than here in Canada. The group leader, Karen Wilgosh, also talked about money usage and various currencies, as the money system changes for different locations in Europe. The group also talked about possible delicacies the group might have for dinner during the journey. The trip is taking place over the Easter holidays with March 27 as the confirmed departure date. The trip will take travellers to England, France, Liechtenstein, Switzerland, and Germany.
Global Stories of The Week: Suspicious deaths in Manitoba
Five people are dead after a troubling killing spree in southern Manitoba. According to CTV News, on Sunday Feb. 11, RCMP responded to three crime scenes near Carman, Manitoba. The investigation began around 7:30 a.m. on Sunday when officers responded to a report of a hit-and- run on Highway 3 near Carman. When Mounties got to the scene, they found a woman’s body in a nearby ditch. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Around 10 a.m., RCMP received a call about a car on fire on Highway 248 in the R.M. of Cartier, Man. While officers were on the way, a witness pulled three young children from the burning car. All three children were declared dead at the scene. A suspect was taken into custody at the scene of the car fire. Officers continued to investigate, which led them to a home in Carman, where they found the body of another woman. There is no further risk to the public and the investigation continues, according to the RCMP.
Bell Media lays off thousands of employees
On Feb 8, Bell Media’s upper management announced that 4,800 employees were laid off in the biggest strike for the company in 30 years. According to CTV News, which is owned by Bell Media, the company laid off a number of big name journalists in major Canadian cities. The employees laid off include Manitoba Bureau Chief Jill Machyson, CTV National News Montreal Correspondent Vaneesa Lee, B.C. Bureau Chief Melanie Nagy, Alberta Bureau Chief Bill Fortier, along with Ottawa Correspondent Kevin Gallagher. Bell Media also announced that all CTV News At Noon Shows in Atlantic Canada, Montreal, Ottawa, Kitchener, Winnipeg, Regina, Saskatoon, Calgary, Edmonton, and Vancouver would come to an immediate end with Toronto as the only remaining Lunch Time newscast.
CTV News Yorkton and CTV News Prince Albert will no longer air at noon as they used to and will instead air at 5 p.m. right before CTV National News With Sandie Rinaldo on their respected network channels. The company announced that all local weekends newscasts at 6 and ll:30 p.m. would come to an end except in Toronto, Ottawa, and Montreal. Bell Media also announced the cancellation of This Hour With Angie Seth, The Debate With Mike Le Couteur, and Top 3 With Merella Fernandez which all aired weeknights on CTV News Channel from April 2023 to February 2024. The company announced the cancellation of W5 after over 50 years of airing one-hour episodes on CTV. W5 will continue as an exclusive segment on CTV National News. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau responded to the layoffs during a press conference calling it “a garbage decision,” while the heritage minister accused Bell Media of not complying with a past statement about expanding local news. This set of layoffs comes after Bell Media closed all of CTV’s international Bureau posts except for Washington D.C. and the firing of Lisa Laflamme back in August of 2022.
