CANORA - The Canora Composite School Cougars junior girls basketball team hosted the Kamsack Spartans on Feb. 2 in a battle that came right down to the end before a winner was decided, with Kamsack prevailing by 27-25.
The Cougars raced out to a 7-2 lead in the first quarter, but that was the largest lead by either team throughout the game. CCS led 15-13 at halftime, and then the Spartans edged in front 23-21 at the end of the third quarter.
The Cougars had a chance to tie the game or even go ahead in the final seconds, but Kamsack prevailed.
CCS Coach Cindy Sznerch said she was very proud of the Canora players.
“It was a very close game and Canora worked hard until the end. The intensity is much higher in a close game and I'm always impressed that they are able to stay focused when the game can go either way.”
The season has been a success to this point in terms of player development, according to Sznerch.
“I enjoy seeing player growth, especially when they begin to instinctively know where to be on the court. This team has been a very strong defensive unit from the beginning, so the main focus during practices has been offence.”
Upcoming action includes road trips to Yorkton and Preeceville. Conference playoffs are set for Feb. 13-14 in Norquay.
