Canora Supers open 2022 season with pair of wins at home

Timely offence and strong pitching key wins for Supers.

CANORA — On May 25 the Canora Supers hosted the Langenburg Legends to kick of the new season, and were full value for a 6-1 victory.

Both starting pitchers kept the opposing team at bay for the most part.

“But in the end, Supers ace Kody Rock turned in another gem, allowing just two hits and one run. Rock struck out 13, and walked just one for a complete game victory,” said Greg Andreychuk, Supers player/coach. “He also set the tone early on offence with a double and a run scored in the first inning.”

The offence took advantage of three first-inning walks as well as a couple of timely hits given up by Legends ace pitcher Evan Markham to score four runs and never looked back.

“Two more in the third inning sealed the deal,” reported Andreychuk. “Travis Mentanko contributed a single, walk and two runs scored. Sean Kolodziejski had a single, while Jayden Heskin chipped in with an RBI single and a sacrifice fly. Kholton Shewchuk drew two walks and scored two runs.”

Making their Supers debuts were Tanner Denesowych and Shae Peterson.

On May 27 the Supers played their second straight home game, this time against the visiting Roblin Stars from across the border in Manitoba.

“All day long it looked like a rainout was the most likely outcome,” said Andreychuk. “But Al Sapieha Field soaked in the moisture flawlessly. When all was said and done a game was played and the Supers came out on top with a 6-3 victory.”

Tanner Denesowych made his pitching debut for Canora, going six strong innings. He gave up just three runs (one earned) on eight hits, two walks and struck out six for the win. Kholton Shewchuk came in relief to pick up the save, allowing just one walk with a strikeout in the seventh and final inning.

The Supers’ bats were held mostly in check by Stars ace pitcher Lyndon Zimmer until the late going.

“In the bottom of the sixth inning Kholton Shewchuk came through with a three-run double and Travis Mentanko followed with a two-run home run to put the Supers in the driver’s seat,” detailed Andreychuk. “Kody Rock blasted his first home run of the year in the first inning, while Shae Peterson and Evan Rostotski each chipped in with a single.”

The Supers will be hitting the road for games versus the Parkland Pirates and the Legends, before the Supers return home on Monday, June 13 to face the Yorkton Marlins.
