Canora student athletes excel at districts

Canora earned numerous medals and qualified five student athletes for provincials.

CANORA - “We brought home some medals, ribbons, and some personal best times and scores, which is all we can ask for as coaches!”

Coached by Leona Kitchen and Thomas Lowes, the Canora Composite School team competed in Districts at Yorkton on May 24-25 and had an excellent meet, with five athletes qualifying for provincials.

Joey Palagian led the way with a pair of first-place finishes in senior boys 200M and shot put, as well as a fourth in long jump. Palagian also made the division’s 4X100M relay team, where the athletes are chosen based on performance.

Matthew Makowsky finished first in junior boys high jump, second in the 400M, third in javelin and fourth in the 100M.

Zoe Thomas won the gold medal in the senior girls 80M hurdles, second in the triple jump, and third in discus.

Numerous other Canora athletes had strong results at districts.

Falyn Ostafie placed fifth in intermediate girls 200M, eighth in the 100M, and 15th in long jump.

Sofia Tratch finished third in junior girls triple jump, fourth in the high jump, and fifth in the 400M.

Callie Sznerch was sixth in junior girls 1500M, and 10th in shot put.

Kailey Sleeva placed second in senior girls discus and third in shot put.

In the bantam girls long jump, Merrick Derkatch placed third, and also added a fifth in the 100M.

Kaelyn Shukin finished fifth in bantam girls 200M and eighth in the long jump. Heidi Mentanko was eighth in the triple jump.

In peewee girls action, Paisley Wolkowski placed fifth in shot put, 13th in high jump, and 14th in the long jump. Danielle Dutchak was fifth in the 100M, sixth in the long jump, and seventh in the triple jump. Madison Dutchak placed 10th in the 400M. Mahra Collingridge finished 12th in the triple jump.

On the boys side, Andrew Sliva kept moving up the intermediate boys standings as the distances increased. He took fifth in the 800M, fourth in the 1500M, and third in the 3000M.

Henry Craig took third in intermediate boys triple jump, fifth in the high jump, and eighth in the long jump. Cooper Kraynick placed fourth in boys discus, fifth in the 100M and the shot put, and seventh in the long jump.

Jordan Makowsky finished fourth in intermediate boys shot put and fourth in javelin. Logan Sznerch was 10th in shot put and 11th in javelin. 

In junior boys competition, Noah Prychak placed third in discus, fourth in shot put, and fifth in javelin. Michael Desrosiers was seventh in javelin and eighth in long jump. Karbin Rubletz placed eighth in javelin and ninth in shot put.

Hunter Lamb finished second in senior boys 3000m, fifth in the 800M, and eighth in the long jump. Jaxon Bisschop was fourth in the 100M hurdles. Jackson Krotenko placed seventh in the triple jump and the javelin. Porter Wolkowski finished fourth in the discus.

In peewee boys action, Kasen Heshka placed fourth in the 800M and the 3000M, where Mario Kastrioti came in ninth. Parker Kraynick was fifth in the high jump and seventh in the shot put.

Jackson Palagian finished 12th in the long jump.

Coaches Leona Kitchen and Thomas Lowes said they were pleased with how things turned out in Yorkton.

“The weather was perfect, there was a breeze to keep the mosquitos away and no rain.  All of our athletes pushed themselves to perform at their best.” 

Canora athletes who qualified for provincials in Saskatoon on June 2 and 3, were:

  • Matthew Makowsky in junior boys 400M and high jump;
  • Hunter Lamb in senior boys 3000M;
  • Zoe Thomas in senior girls hurdles and triple jump;
  • Kailey Sleeva in discus; and
  • Joey Palagian in 200M, shot put and 4x100M relay.
