CANORA - In what has become a popular Canora Family Day tradition, the Ted Palagian Memorial Two-Person Stick Bonspiel was held at the Sylvia Fedoruk Centre on Feb. 17.
The more experienced curlers seemed to have an advantage, since they were more accustomed to the stick delivery, but the younger curlers appeared to enjoy the challenge of using a different method to throw rocks.
In the stick bonspiel, the two team members alternate throwing six rocks per end. Sweeping is only allowed from the hog line to the rings, and they play six-end games.
A total of 14 teams were entered. They were split into three pools: white (four teams), yellow (four teams) and orange (six teams).
Each team played three round robin games, earning four points per win, two points per tie, and two points for scoring in an end.
The four teams qualifying for the semifinal round were those with the top scores from the white and yellow pools, and the top two teams from the orange pool.
As it turned out, the teams of Kelly Beblow and Bob Kolodziejski, and Sean and Bailey Kolodziejski, both of Canora, ended up tied for second place in the orange pool. They played a one-end mini game, with each player throwing three rocks, with Kelly and Bob coming out on top.
They then defeated Peter Wiwchar and Curtis Baillie of Canora in the semifinal, and Robert Waselenko and Brian Herriges in the final, also of Canora, to with the 2025 Ted Palagian Memorial Two-Person Stick Bonspiel championship.
The other duo that qualified for the semifinal was Vern and Judy Schick of Good Spirit.
Other teams that took part in the bonspiel included: Bill Foreman of Canora and Nick Woloschuk of Buchanan, Joey and Jackson Palagian of Canora, Darryl Stevenson and Ernie Gazdewich of Canora, Vickie Stevenson and Don Probe of Canora, Ally Rock and Don St. Mars of Canora, Natalie Trebick and Koren Baillie of Canora, Norleen and Tannis Bork of Hyas, John Chesney and Brian Roebuck of Hilltop, and Dave Zbeetnoff and Stan Stump of Yorkton.
Vern Schick, one of the organizers, said they were pleased to have 14 teams entered, on par with last year.
“It was nice to see a few new people out there,” concluded Schick.
