CANORA — The Canora Ladies Bonspiel took place on March 25 to 27 at the Sylvia Fedoruk Centre featuring 11 teams from: Canora, Buchanan, Kamsack, Norquay and Yorkton.
After three round robin games and two more in the playoffs, the Ally Rock foursome of Canora took home the top prize by winning the ‘A’ event final. The members of the winning side were: Rock, skip; Kylee Toffan, third; Jodie Kowalyshyn shot second rocks, and Kaitlin Mak played lead.
The round robin portion was a Brandon Draw format, with each team playing three games. Points were given as follows: 0 points for blank ends, 2 points per end won, 5 points for a tie game and 10 points for a win.
The top four teams in the round robin were: Rock with 52 points, Kristen Worobetz of Yorkton had 42, the Brigitte Herriges rink of Canora/Yorkton came in third with 40, and Judy Schick of Canora was fourth at 36 points.
The top four teams went to the ‘A’ side playoffs, seeds 4 to 8 to the ‘B’ side. The losers of the ‘A’ semifinals played in the C final, the losers of the ‘B’ semifinals played for top spot in the ‘D’ event.
In the ‘A’ final, Rock got off to a fast start with six points in the first three ends, and went on to defeat Worobetz. The Kim Kindiak rink of Kamsack took home the ‘B’ event championship. The Schick team won the ‘C’ event, and Lauren Mentanko skipped her Canora foursome to victory in the ‘D’ event.
In addition to those already mentioned, other teams competing in the bonspiel were: Team Tailenders of Norquay, Meaghan Hadubiak of Canora/Buchanan, Jessica Hutchings of Canora,
Kellyanne Ostafie of Canora and Amber Boychuk of Canora/Yorkton.
In addition to skipping her own rink Brigitte Herriges was also one of the bonspiel organizers, and said it was an enjoyable and successful event.
“The curling rink concession and bar were busy,” reported Herriges. “We had a large number of people stop in who were at the skating rink next door for hockey playoffs.”
But curling wasn’t the only competition taking place at the bonspiel. At the banquet on Saturday night a hillbilly costume contest was held among the bonspiel participants, with Team Tailenders of Norquay declared the winners. Prizes included: curling trophies, sausage, and some "hillbilly moonshine."
