CANORA - The finals of the Duck Mountain Super League 2022-23 curling season wrapped up in Canora on Jan. 10. Both A side semifinal games were hard fought battles, according to a release from Glen Becenko.
On sheet one, the top finishing team during the season, Swan Valley Chiropractic, stole a single point on W.F. Schneider and Sons, after they were tied coming home, to win 6-5.
In the other A side semifinal on sheet three, last year’s champions, Swan Hills Properties, fell behind early to Pioneer Hybrid of Canora. Being down three points playing the eighth and final end, they were able to tie the game and force an extra end, where the Canora foursome were able to get the single point for the victory.
“The final was a tight contest with both teams making great shots,” said Becenko.
The game was tied coming home in the eighth with the local team having last rock. With two rocks at the back of the four-foot, Swan Valley Chiropractic attempted to freeze on the counters. The sweepers gave it all they had, but the rock came up just short. Pioneer Hybrid did not have to throw their last rock, giving them the championship title by the score of 6-5.
In the B side semifinals it was NCC Farms over Hub International 7-5. In the other contest, it was Pattison Ag trying to win their first game of the year, but Challoner Farms was just a bit stronger, holding to win 7-6.
“The B final was an all-out offense game with both teams scoring two and three-enders,” reported Becenko. NCC Farms’ skip made a run-back raise double takeout to lay two points. The Challoner Farms skip tried his own raise but just missed, giving up two points. The game went into the seventh end, but another steal by NCC Farms forced the opposition to pull off the gloves and shake hands, giving them the B side victory.
“Fans were treated to some good curling that night and all the nights during the season,” said Becenko. “Many thanks to everyone that came out and supported the league. I would like to once again thank all the team sponsors, curling clubs, and the food and beverage workers. This year was a great success, but it promises to be even bigger and better next year.
