Agriculture Minister Lyle Stewart has proclaimed October as Agriculture Month in Saskatchewan. The month will focus on profiling opportunities in agriculture to youth.
"Agriculture is one of the largest economic engines in Saskatchewan, accounting for about 10 per cent of the provincial gross domestic product and generating more than 50,000 jobs in the province," Stewart said. "As harvest continues and school gets underway, October is an ideal time to share with youth the opportunities that this thriving industry has to offer."
With a growing global demand for food comes high demand for well-trained individuals to work in the agriculture industry. To attract youth to a rewarding career in agriculture, the ministry has launched a new web presence at www.saskatchewan.ca/thinkag that profiles real Saskatchewan people employed in the industry. In addition to interactive career features, this site offers scholarship information and teacher resources.
In addition to the website, a thinkAG Facebook page has also been launched to give current and potential ag employees a forum to discuss careers in agriculture and what the industry has to offer.
During the month of October, teachers, career counsellors, producers and industry are encouraged to get involved in spreading the message that a job in agriculture can lead to a challenging, rewarding career.
