YORKTON - The Yorkton Regional 4-H Show was once again a major activity on the opening day of the local summer fair.
More than 90 4-H youth from eight clubs took part in the show, which saw 90 steers and 45 females paraded before judge John Hogberg of Langenburg.
“The steer show was good – pretty solid throughout,” Hogberg told Yorkton This Week.
The Grand Champion Steer was shown by Kaden Michelson of the Yellowhead Club with a Maine Anjou x Angus steer weighing 1416 pounds.
Abby Tomblin of the Sheho Club took Reserve Champion Steer with her Clubby x Angus steer weighing 1312 pounds.
When it came to the female side of things Hogberg noted, “the heifer show the top end was nice – solid throughout.”

Grand Champion two-year-old cow with calf was shown by Lilly Johnson of the Foam Lake Club. She exhibited a Simmental/Angus cow with an Angus/Simm-Angus calf at foot. Cow born April 13, 2021. Calf born April 16, 2023.

The job of a judge in a show like Yorkton is not always easy as all breeds show together, which makes choosing which is best more complicated, “all the breeds have their own characteristics,” said Hogberg, which is challenging as you “compare them against each other.”
That is particularly true of females which should show breed characteristics if they are going to be kept as breeding stock.
But, the 4-H members were given explanations of Hogberg’s choices throughout the show.
“I think it’s important. You want to be able to point out what you did and why you did it,” he said.
Hogberg, who has been asked to judge various shows in recent years as he has returned home from university, added for the 4-H members the regional show is the culmination of a year of hard work so understanding what transpired in the showring is important.
“The show is something they’ve been building up to, and working for all year,” he said.
